Helen will be sadly missed by all her family and friends, but they are so relieved she is finally at peace. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Herschel Laskey and Bernard Laskey a sister, Sarah Katz and a brother-in-law, Ben Katz and mother, Lillian Laskowitz. She leaves: her daughter Bonnie (Freed) Balakoff and her husband Gregory and her grandsons, Zach and Max Balakoff, all of Hermitage a son, Carter Freed and grandson, Josh Freed. Her husband, Irvine Freed, passed away on May 9, 1999. Her grandchildren treasured her and her close friends and relatives always trusted in her, as she was a true friend to those whom she loved. She loved reading, listening to her favorite music, cooking and gardening. Spending time with her family was where she found her greatest joy. She was well loved and respected by her many employees who worked for her, many as long as 30 to 50 years. Helen had exquisite taste when it came to fashion and also had an amazing love and flair in the fashion business. She will always be remembered for her quick wit and great sense of humor. She was an avid cook and loved cooking and entertaining for her family and close friends over the years as well as traveling to her homes in Fort Lauderdale and later in Boca Raton, Fla. Helen retired from business in the 1980s to become what made her happiest, being a homemaker. in the Shenango Valley Mall, now in its fourth generation run by her daughter and son-in-law in downtown Sharon. She also had owned and operated Helen Freed’s Inc. Later, she owned and operated several stores in the original Hickory Plaza including Little Guys and Dolls, Town and Tweed and the Village Tree. Freed married her husband, Irvine Freed, June 18, 1943, and then worked alongside him at the former Freed’s Federated on Idaho Street in Farrell. She was a member of Temple Beth Israel and a lifetime member of Hadassah.
